How To Troubleshoot Vertical Lines on the PC Screen

There are a number of possible factors computer screens show vertical lines. These factors ranges from: the screen settings, excessive heat causing damage to the GPU, the RAM is faulty where the GPU gets its VRAM from, or the functioning of the screen itself. One of these underlying issues might be causing vertical lines to display on your screen. Sometimes, to rectify this problem can be simple and easy, other times can require technical troubleshooting.



TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE


1. Update the graphics driver
Right click Start button and select Device Manager. Check for graphics or video card drivers with a yellow error sign. If it has a yellow sign on it, double click on it and open Properties. Click on Update Driver under the Drivers tab. After updating, restart your PC. Updated drivers are crucial for maximum performance and stability. If the vertical lines still show after driver update, move to the second option.


2. Switch off Computer and disconnect all peripherals.
If you are using a laptop, take out the battery and remove the charger. After that, press and hold down the power button for 15 to 30 seconds to release all the residual power left in the system. PC motherboards have a 3.0 volt battery that powers real time clock settings even when powered off and disconnected from the PSU, firmware settings stored in volatile RAM even though latest motherboards store all firmware settings in Flash Memory (Non-volatile RAM) and also provide power to the power control circuitry. Connect everything back and turn the system on to check and see if the problem is fixed.

If you're using a desktop, disconnect the monitor from the computer and wait to see if "No Signal" message displays. If the vertical lines shows as the message displays, then the monitor is the underlying cause of the problem. 3. Check for vertical lines at boot.
If you see the lines right at boot even before the OS loads, it may be either the video cable or the video card or possibly the screen itself. If the lines display only when Windows load to Desktop environment, then the problem resides in Windows setting. You may Right-click on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution. Click on Advanced Settings, select Monitor and then reduce the refresh rate and check to see if the lines are gone.

For further troubleshooting methods, try using "System Restore" in Control Panel to restore the system to an earlier state. After going through all methods and problem still persist, the screen may possibly be damaged and can't be fixed.
